Respond to the class discussion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Respond to the class discussion - Essay Example Instead, he will expose his own family and himself to tensions that will destroy harmony. Even his own relations with his friend would take an unpleasant turn once his family would be suffering. He may, at a later point in time, regret having helped his friend and curse him for his failure, while the friend may not even feel sorry for him! Therefore, Kant’s theory would recommend complying with the first formulation rather than the third. Response to class fellows on first discussion: Marta: I agree to you in your analysis of the first formulation of Kant not for the reason you have provided but because that was the demand of the first formulation. You have given the matter an altogether different dimension of perspective that I think is not quite relevant here. You have said that father should not lie because lying is wrong, and not because he has an obligation towards his family. That would be completely wrong and inconsiderate of father if he chooses not to lie because lyin g is bad. ... Cshena: You are right in your analysis of the first formulation of Kant. I also believe that father should resolve to save his career and his family’s future instead of saving his friend. It is the requirement of the first formulation of Kant. If father helps his friend, he will still gain blame of his own wife and seven children, so the job is plainly not perfect. Also, father will earn the praise of his friend for having saved his life. This renders his act imperfect in light of the first formulation of Kant. I also consent with you in your interpretation of Kant’s third formulation because it fundamentally requires father to fulfill his duty towards the society irrespective of his personal concerns. Henke: You have come up with a general response to the question and have not clearly analyzed the case separately in light of the first and third formulations of Kant. However, I do consent with you when you say that father should be protective towards his own family. He has got a wife and seven children to take care of and for whom, he is the sole bread earner. I also like the way you have analyzed the matter in a broader background that involves all people of society. You said that it would be wrong for father to lie because this would encourage everybody to lie and that would be wrong. However, I think you could have looked at it differently! You could have said, â€Å"What if every family in the society hid a Jewish family?† That would obviously have raised government’s suspicion for its own people, and ultimately, life of not only the Jews but also of non-Jews would be on stake. Response to class fellows on the second discussion: Parker: I

Mother Teresa Essay Example for Free

Mother Teresa Essay Mother Teresa has dedicated her life to helping the poor, the sick, and the dying around the world. She is one of the most well known and respected people of the 20th century. The movie that viewed in class displayed it very well. It showed how much she cared about the un-cared for and how she preached to millions of people around the world. In her speeches she spoke of blessing the misfortunate and loving them as well. She also spoke of how easy it is to help them. All we have to do is show some love towards them that they would normally never get. Mother Teresa is one of the most kind people on the planet and goes around spreading the love and affection. She was born in Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia. Her parents were Albanians who settled in Skopje near the beginning of the century. He father was a owner of a major construction company so Mother Teresa grew up in a very comfortable environment. In 1928 she suddenly decided to become a nun and traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to join the Sisters of Loreto. After studying with the Sisters in the convent, she left to join another convent in northeast India. On May 24, 1931, she took the name of Teresa in honor of St. Teresa of Avila. At first, Mother Teresa was assigned to teach a small Geography class at St. Marys High School in Calcutta. Mother Teresa noticed all the beggars, lepers, and homeless people on the streets of Calcutta. There lives were horrible, living on other peoples scraps and letting babies that they couldnt support die in trash bins. She decided to ask the archbishop if she could stop her teaching and dedicate her life to helping the less fortunate. When Mother Teresa received a written consent that it was okay, she began her work. In 1948 Pope Pius XII gave Mother Teresa permission to be a totally independant nun, so she became an Indian citizen. After studying about nursing, she founded the Missionaries of Charity. This was a group of nuns who go around and help the sick and dying. All the nuns that agreed to work in the Missionaries of Charity had to devote their lives to helping the poor and not to receive any money or material things. To the side is a  picture of a letter that Mother Teresa sent to a nun that wanted to join the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa welcomed her into the group with praise. Now to the movie. The movie did a very good job of showing how much Mother Teresa cared for the sick. The main part of the movie that I remember was the part when Mother Teresa and her nuns were starting a whole new center to the sick and dying. When the person that owned the building was telling the nuns and Mother Teresa about all the nice things they has in the building, the nuns almost simultaneously said, I dont think we will be needing that. The nuns and Mother Teresa live in such low living conditions and dont seem to mind. Unlike most of us, she doesnt need material things to get along. All she needs is some running water and the necessary materials to help the sick. Mother Teresa did such great work for the poor that she received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. Pope Paul VI honored Mother Teresa by awarding her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. The following year the government of India presented her with the Jawaharial Nehru Award for International Understanding. In 1979 she received her greatest award, the Nobel Peace Prize. Mother Teresa accepted all of these awards on behalf of the poor, suing any money that accompanied them to fund her centers. By 1990 over 3,000 nuns belonged to the running centers in 25 countries. Obviously, Mother Teresas missions to help the poor were a tremendous success. There are also some kinds of summer groups like Habitat for Humanity. Unlike Habitat for Humanity these groups of kids go out and help the sick and dying just like Mother Teresa. The leader of these groups is a well known priest by the name of Johann Christoph. These kids love to do what Mother Teresa does best and make many dying people happy in there last days of life. The School that did this was the Wake Forest University. Or as they prefer to be called the City of Joy Scholars. The kids spent 18 long days in Calcutta as Mother Teresas first help center. The kids remember the varied cultures and races that Mother Teresa and the nuns love so very much. No matter how sick they looked. The kids were forever changed mentally and  emotionally after seeing and helping the helpless. The Missionaries of Charity and Mother Teresa are probably the most caring people on Earth. Mother Teresa is already called a Saint. She is the one and only living Saint. I enjoyed the movie and learned a lot about Mother Teresa and here mission to help the sick, lepers, and homeless. I trust she will succeed but she will need more nuns to join the famous Missionaries of Charity.

Big Daddy: A Movie Depicting a Father and Son relationship :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Adam Sandler used bad manners and used profanity in front of his son. His values were messed up. He didn't have any conscience what so ever and he had very few morals if any. His son picked a lot of bad habits from his father; like laughing when someone got hurt, urinating in public, and bad manners. His father also argued with people in front of his son.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Adam Sandler’s emotion, passion, determination, perseverance made him a good father. He gave his son a lot of experiences that helped go through a lot that will make his son stronger mindset good or bad. He was honest to his son and he spoke his mind to his son. He gave his son enough freedom, but still was able to guide in the way to be successful. He was an active father and he spent a lot of time with his son doing a lot of activities to together. He loved his son more than anything in the world. He prevented son from becoming obese by going outside with them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Adam Sandler improved a lot from when he first had to take care of Julian. At first he did not teach his son proper hygiene habits and his son smelled horrible, but by the movie his son was bathed regularly. At first he was behaving horrible in front of his son, but by the end of the movie he was making a positive impact on his neighborhood with his son. Sandler began to realize that his own poor behavior had a negative effect on Julian’s behavior. He also showed more hospitality at home with Julian by sharing the TV with him and letting watch his movie while the hockey game was on/   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I would not done that much differently if I was put in the same situation, considering how hard of situation it was. I would never claimed to be someone I really wasn’t. I thought Sandler was a good father all things considered. It’s hard to raise a kid when you’re not his biological father because the kid usually doesn’t trust his non-biological father as much as his biological father. I might have not embarrassed myself and not set a bad example for my kids. There are certain characteristics necessary to being a good parent. A good must have patience and tolerance always especially when his child is overtired making him misbehave.

Cells And Cell Theory :: essays research papers

Cells and Cell Theory What advantages does small size give to a cell? Many cellular processes occur by diffusion, which is efficient over short distances, but less efficient over long distances. Since all materials going in and out of a cell must pass through the plasma membrane, the greater the surface area of this membrane, the faster a given quantity of molecules can pass through. Smaller cells have a much greater surface-to-volume ratio than larger cells and therefore can "feed" all areas of the cell in less time. What is "surface-to-volume ratio," and how does it affect cell size? The surface-to-volume ratio is a mathematical relationship between the volume of an object and the amount of surface area it has. This ratio often plays an important role in biological structures. Think of a cell as a sphere: The surface area of a sphere can be calculated by 4Ã ° r2 where r is the radius of the sphere. Volume of a sphere can be calculated by 4/3 Ã ° r3. An increase in r will increase the surface area by a power of two, but increase the volume by a power of three. This means that the volume will increase much faster than the surface area. This puts an upper limit on the size of a cell, because if the cell volume gets too big, there won't be enough membrane to transport the amount of food in and wastes out to support that large cell size. What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? Prokaryotic cells are more simple: they are usually much smaller and don't have a nucleus or any other membrane-bound organelles. Bacteria are prokaryotes. Eukaryotic cells are much more complex, are usually larger, and have a nucleus and several other membrane-bound organelles that allow them to compartmentalize their functions. All multicellular plants and animals are eukaryotes. A helpful trick to remember is that "you" are a "eu"karyote. Are there any single-celled eukaryotes? Yes--yeast, for example. Yeast are single-celled organisms, but they do contain a membrane-bound nucleus, mitochondria, and other organelles. What are the advantages and disadvantages of prokaryotic compared to eukaryotic cells? Although prokaryotes may seem more primitive than eukaryotes, they are among the most successful species on our plant and comprise a very large percentage of the total mass of all living things on earth. Simple, small, and single-celled organisms can reproduce quickly and evolve quickly. Prokaryotes can generate millions of progeny in a short period of time.

Critical Review of On Coffee Talk and Break-Room Chatter: Perceptions of Women Who Gossip in the Workplace

Farley, Timme, and Hart's (2010) article describes a study, which investigated the perceptions of female gossipers within the workplace. Approximately 500 students were asked to complete an online survey, 87 of whom (aged from 23 to 64) completed all 54 items. A questionnaire was conducted which included demographic items, and the subscales of a modified FIRO-B. Participants were arbitrarily allocated to a condition and were asked to â€Å"think of a female co-worker who frequently or rarely contributes negative information about other people during conversation† (Farley et al. p. 365) and then evaluate the target using a modified version of Schutz’s (1958) FIRO-B, which is a measuring instrument that contains six scales of nine-item questions (cited in Farley et al, 2010). Participants then judged the female co-worker on a five-point Likert-Type scale. The results showed that high gossipers were rated as needing to express more control than low gossipers. The participa nts also rated the high gossipers as wanting others to control them less than low gossipers.Furthermore, high gossipers were rated as less emotionally close with their peers than low gossipers. These findings support the hypothesis that high gossipers would obtain higher ratings on the express control dimension than low gossipers. The results also support the hypothesis that high gossipers would be rated as less likely to want others to put forth power over them than low gossipers. Farley et al. ‘s (2010) experiment needs a small degree of critiquing. For one, it uses a poor assortment of participants, as the sample is too constricted to make any real generalizations.Participants were recruited via email. This method of assignment would have led to unequal groups in terms of demographic characteristics such as different ages and gender (cited in Farley et al, 2010). Older people may be more judgmental of gossiping than younger people; therefore this may hinder the final result s. Also, the experimenter only used females in the questionnaire, drawing on the myth that the majority of gossipers are females; therefore it does not generalize to everyone in the workplace. There may well have been an interaction effect between gossipers and gender; therefore males as well as females should have been included in the questionnaire. Furthermore, I am not satisfied with how the authors defined ‘gossip’; in fact there is no clear statement delineating ‘gossip’. The lack of the experimenters’ control over the independent variable (gender) makes it a subject variable as opposed to a manipulated variable, therefore it is a quasi experiment and you cannot infer causality from the results.

America Today VS. Brave New World essays

America Today VS. Brave New World essays In the novel, Brave New World we learn about two civilizations that seem corrupt to our current capitalistic American society. Americans reading this story may not be able to fathom the two societies with such different rules and ideologies than our own. This idea in itself sheds light on a similarity between our society and those in the book. As stated previously we are not able to understand and embrace the cultures of other people even those just living across the ocean from us. Similarly neither of the two societies described by Huxley have the capability to comprehend and accept the others culture. This was demonstrated in one instance when Linda of the World State is lost and forced into living on the reservation. Once there she continues in her cultural habit of participating in sexual activities with many different men. The people of the reservation cannot accept her culture and in turn ostracize her from their community. There are many other ideas presented by Huxley that show a similarity between American society and that of the World State. One such idea was that of cloning. At the time this novel was written the concept of cloning seemed far-fetched, but with current scientific practices coning has become a reality. With this reality has come the realization of what could be done with cloning and genetic enhancement. This novel clearly enlightens us to the possibilities. Parallel cultural influences between American society and that of the World State also exist. Presently science and technology are a powerful and driving influence in our life, as they were in the World State. In the New World State soma a scientifically created drug is a symbol of powerful influences. It is a drug that relaxes the mind and body. Everyone uses it as a daily ritual. By the end of the novel it is described as, Christianity without tears-thats what soma is (162). It makes everyone peaceful, like a good vacation. In the W...
